I live on Lake Arenal in Costa Rica because of all the places I have visited and lived in this beautiful central american country, Arenal provides great recreation, wide open space, moderate weather, plenty of rain to keep things green, and an interesting and expanding expat community for interaction. There is really no other spot in Costa Rica quite like Arenal. Do not confuse Arenal with La Fortuna as many people seem to do because of the proximity of Arenal Volcano to Fortuna and the huge investment that the la Fortuna area has made in hotels and infrastucture to seperate tourists from their hard earned dollars.

The Arenal that I am talking about consists of various communities surrounding Lake Arenal in Guanacaste. The principal communities are la union, nuevo arenal, aguacate, tierra morenos, puerto san luis and tilaran. Sure there are other communities in the area that I have not mentioned but sometimes these small towns are only two or three homes and one huge cattle farm!

The towns of Nuevo Arenal and Tilaran have the most expats and business and services that cater to expats. Arenal is right on the lake and even though it might be a bit boring if you are not an independent sort, it's got awesome weather - very interesting weather in fact because at my house on the ridge line i can have a down pour on one side of the house while my girl friend is sun bathing on the other side!.
