Retire in Costa Rica

If you are considering retirement, and who doesn’t occasionally think about the final stages of life on earth, then you may be considering retirement in Costa Rica because you have heard that it is a beautiful country with friendly people and lower costs then home. You have heard that Costa Rica has open arms for retirees who want to buy a home and live out their golden years in the tropical splendor of central america. What you have heard is not to far off from what I have heard and know from over 20 years of living in Costa Rica.

Many of the books and web sites that promote retirement in Costa Rica tell you that you do not need to know the language, but this is an absolute lie. Failure to speak even basic spanish will leave you feeling frustrated, incomplete and surrounded by other expats who speak your native tongue. You will miss out on so much of the fun of learning a new culture, of communication in a foreign language, of laughing at jokes. Be sure when you decide to move to Costa Rica that you are dedicated enough to learn spanish, which is actually quite an easy language to pickup. I spent 3 years in San Jose with a self teaching book and a variety of girl friends, and avoided all english speakers so that I after these 3 years of solid emersion I had a real start on the language. I am always learning new words and perfecting my accent, even after 20 years here.

Another item of interest to those considering Costa Rica as a place to retire, is the cost of housing. A recent study of housing costs in latin america showed Costa Rica to be the most expensive place for home ownership and I must say that it can be expensive to buy or build a home in Costa Rica. However, once you have your home paid for, maintaining your home is relatively easy and not expensive. My house keeper, with four kids, lives on a monthly income of about $300, yet she is going to build herself a small house of her very own. She will receive a government grant and loan program that helps single mothers own a home. But I also have a friend with a house at the beach on a stunning mountain top with a 360 degree panoramic view that is for sale for nearly $900,000!

Health care is a common topic among the older people who come here to retire. You can buy into the local health care system, which is modeled after the system setup by the AMA, which works reasonably well, mind you there may be some wait time involved in getting seen by your doctor. The price is reasonable and in fact is a requirement of many of the legal retirement status that would apply for here. If you like homeopathy, this too can be found in Costa Rica, along with ancient herbal healers.

Perfect weather. Interesting expat community. Wide open spaces. Lake activities. Secure gated communities. Large ranches. Small homes in town. Inexpensive to million dollar mansions. Lake Arenal Costa Rica has it all and then some.

If you like fishing Captain Ron has an excellent reputation for lake Arenal fishing tours. Or maybe wind surfing or kiteboarding is more your adrenaline rush. Finally for lake water sports you can try Wake Boarding with Paradise Adventures for the most fun.

Other activities on Lake Arenal include horseback riding, walking, bike riding, motor cycle rides, bird watching, planting forest trees, painting the school, people watching, the list goes on and is only limited by your imagination.

There are many expats living on Lake Arenal now who never leave Costa Rica because they believe they have found and live in paradise. Now is a great time to visit the Lake Arenal area, between Tilaran and La Fortuna, may you find your peace.

Beach Real Estate

Costa Rica beach real estate offers warm dry weather, awesome views, entertainment and investment opportunities. I love the heat – it warms my body thru to the bone meal, leaving no part of my soul untouched. I love the fresh sea food and abundant fruits available in the markets along the shore. I love the bars full of happy people forgetting the world’s ills and drinking to another glorious sunset.

Although I live in the mountains of Costa Rica over looking world famous Lake Arenal, I often visit the beaches of Costa Rica to soak up the heat, the food and the scenery. My good friend Kendall Sanborn often invites me to his home overlooking Playa del Coco located in Lomas del Mar, a premier gated residential community near the beach in Guanacaste. I love the view. I can see for miles along the coast and over the foothills of Papagayo and across to the Four Seasons hotel.

If you are interested in owning real estate near the beach in Costa Rica then you should check out Lomas del Mar at Beach Real Estate. You will not be disapointed.

Real Estate Lake Arenal

Lake Arenal is a paradise destination in Costa Rica where expats from around the world call home. On the east side sits famous Volcano Arenal and the tourist town of La Fortuna where partiers frolic fanatically seeking satisfaction. The town has much to offer and is becoming quite the booming tourism destination in Costa Rica.

The northwest side of Lake Arenal has a large and growing expat community who flock to the many turn key secure communities offered by real estate developers. Two gated communities have reduced their prices and are offering outstanding financing options with only 20% down.

Arenal Estates sits above La Union just 10 minutes east from the active town of Nuevo Arenal and offers commanding views of Arenal Lake, Volcano Arenal and some parcels even have river frontage. Prices have been reduced, this real estate in Arenal won’t last long.

Further west, past the town of Arenal, on the road to Tilaran, lies the lake front gated community of Turtle Cove offering lake access and boat dock, 24 hour security, with all utilities underground, paved roads, outstanding views, and central location. Move to Costa Rica

When i first visited Costa Rica in 1989, I flew from Portland, Oregon to Miami, Florida and then rested for most of the afternoon at the Miami airport hotel which has a roof top swimming pool free to passengers smart enough to stumble upon it! And then a RACSA flight direct to San Jose started out with a booze cart pushed down the isle just as the wheels touched off the runway. I can tell you we were very high by the time we arrived at Juan Santa Maria International Airport and I stumbled out onto the tarmac and the greeting customs agents who waved us all thru and into paradise.

My friend Jay was waiting for me and we wizzed off to find some fun. What a two week vacation that was! I can still remember it, the girls, the beaches, the booze, the excitement.
I returned to my work in Portland only to reminisce and miss my good times in Costa Rica. Eventually i was able to sell everything and travel, stopping in Hawaii, Mexico and Costa Rica again to see where i wanted to stop for a few years to learn spanish and write The Great American Novel. I loved Hawaii, but it was very expensive in 1990 and the sun was some how so hot that i could only go into the ocean at the earliest and latest part of the day. Mexico on the other hand held magic and mystery and sexiness and fun and i stayed some many months at my friends house in Bucerias Just north of Puerto Vallarta. However while living in Mexico there were a number of daylight armed thefts right near me and i personally had both police and criminals point guns at me a number of times – to which i am thankful i survived those assaults to tell you of them.

I left Mexico and flew back to Costa Rica and rented a house in Tibas where i setup my Macintosh computer and started to write and study spanish. The first part of business was of course finding a girl friend to teach me – and this was solved almost over night with quite a few young women available for the position. Suddenly i found myself in an ideal situation. No stress. No worries. Plenty of loving and great educational opportunities. I decided to move to Costa Rica.

But moving to Costa Rica 20 years ago was not the same as it is today. In some ways it was easier before 911 and in some ways now adays it’s easier because so many Americans are moving to costa rica to live and retire or invest. But back then i had to fill an airline shipping container pod with my most important possessions and have it airfreighted into san jose airport where after three days of paperwork i filled my van with my household goods and headed for home.

Now you can call one moving company and they will pack and ship all your personal items for you while you sit and the beach and sip a chilling beverage. Even the emergence of PODS and UNITS Portable Storage container systems is facilitating this allowing the home owner to pack their stuff into a portable container and have it shipped anywhere in the world with ease.

Ocean View Costa Rica Paradise

Recently I was privileged to spend a few days at the guest house of Lomas del Mar in Costa Rica. LDM overlooks the beautiful Playas del Coco and is very near the brand new upscale all inclusive resort hotel RIU Guanacaste. The home I stayed in was two stories with four bedrooms each with it’s own bathroom, a large modern kitchen and big family room off the main patio near the infinity swimming pool. The views were outstanding and every day was perfect weather. I liked the beach best near Hotel RIU because the sand was clean and the waves gentle and with practically no people along the 2 kilometer coastline I felt relaxed and happy.

Lomas del Mar has only a few available development lots left for sale as over 110 of the 120 lots have been sold and now at least 14 homes have been built and are lived on on this 600 plus private gated community. The developers have done it right with paved roads, quality power and best of all a series of deep drilled wells tapping into an ancient aquifer to provide endless gallons of rare water

If you would like to rent the home I stayed in or would like more information on real estate investment opportunities at this ocean view development please see their web site.
